The Role

Macquarie University Health is seeking an experienced and respected senior clinician to appoint as Clinical Program Head – Critical Care on a fixed-term, three-year contract.

Clinical Program Heads provide leadership across both academic and clinical services and are integral to the governance and leadership structure of Macquarie University Health as an academic medical centre. Acting as a key interface between clinicians within their Program and Discipline and the Clinical Services Executive, the Clinical Program Head represents the collective clinical voice to executive leadership; while also ensuring executive strategy, standards and expectations are effectively embedded within clinical practice.

This part-time leadership role (0.1 FTE) provides clinical governance oversight and reports to the Medical Advisory Committee, contributing to governance, quality and safety across Macquarie University Hospital and Clinics. The role also provides a reporting line for employed consultant specialists within the Critical Program.

Key Accountabilities

(including but not limited to)

Clinical Governance and Leadership

  • Provide senior clinical leadership and governance oversight for the Critical Care Program across hospital and clinic services.
  • Act as a conduit between Program clinicians and the Clinical Services Executive, ensuring effective two-way communication and engagement.
  • Support and contribute to the work of the Medical Advisory Committee, including clinical governance reporting and escalation of risks and issues as required.
  • Provide leadership and professional oversight to employed consultant specialists within the Program.

Strategy, Quality and Integration

  • Contribute to the delivery of Macquarie University Health’s strategic objectives, including the Integrated System strategic pillar.
  • Support alignment of clinical services with organisational priorities, standards, policies and performance expectations.
  • Champion continuous improvement, patient safety, quality initiatives and evidence-based practice across the Program.
  • Foster collaboration across disciplines and Programs to support integrated, patient-centred models of care.

Academic and Professional Leadership

  • Support the integration of clinical care with education and research, consistent with Macquarie University Health’s academic mission.
  • Promote a culture of professionalism, accountability and collegiality across the Program.
  • Act as a senior clinical ambassador for the Program within Macquarie University Health and externally where appropriate.

About You

You are a highly regarded senior medical practitioner with demonstrated leadership experience and a strong commitment to clinical governance, quality and safety in an academic health environment.

You will bring:

  • Fellowship with the relevant specialist medical college and current registration with AHPRA.
  • Significant clinical experience and professional standing within anaesthetics and/or related clinical care disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, governance, committee participation and stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to represent and advocate for clinicians at an executive level.
  • A collaborative leadership style with the ability to influence, engage and build trust across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to the Mission, Vision and Values of Macquarie University Health.
